293. Sitting on a porch in Northfield, Minnesota

View from a porch

Six years ago I was in major depression and hoping for death. All was dreary, all was dark. I couldn’t think of anything but my own mental anguish and emotional devastation.

Last Saturday, I sat out on the back deck of my son’s home in Northfield, taking in the wonder of God’s creation. The sun was shining here and there between the clouds, birds were chirping in the back yard, trees were coming into bloom, and my little granddaughter had just gotten up from a nap and was on the porch with me waiting for a “Tommy” story.

The message: No matter how dark life looks, there is hope around the corner if you open yourself up to the healing of body, soul, and spirit by trained professionals and the work of the Holy Spirit. You can’t do it on your own or just hope it happens. A glass of water will not refresh you until you drink of it.

About Patrick Day

In 2010, I escaped from four long years of deep, dark depression. This blog shares lessons I learned from those years as depicted in my autobiography - How I Escaped from Depression - as well as other insights about depression and anxiety that only come from someone who has gone through it. When you have a heart attack, you become an expert in heart attacks. When you have diabetes, you become an expert in that condition. As such, I am an expert in depression, with a four-year experiential degree and graduate studies in how to live a life going forward that keeps the ever-lurking Depression at a healthy distance.
