304. Top Ten Treatments for Depression

I recently came across a book called Back from the Brink by Graeme Cowan. It contains interviews with people from all walks of life who suffer from severe depression or bipolar disorder. In the book, Cowan summarizes what he discovered to be the top ten treatments for depression.

  1. Supportive psychiatrist
  2. Supportive psychologist
  3. Support groups and emotional support of family and friends
  4. Vigorous exercise
  5. Psychotherapy
  6. Belief in God, spirituality, religion
  7. Fulfilling work, paid or voluntary
  8. Sleep
  9. CBT – Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  10. ECT – Electroconvulsive therapy

About Patrick Day

In 2010, I escaped from four long years of deep, dark depression. This blog shares lessons I learned from those years as depicted in my autobiography - How I Escaped from Depression - as well as other insights about depression and anxiety that only come from someone who has gone through it. When you have a heart attack, you become an expert in heart attacks. When you have diabetes, you become an expert in that condition. As such, I am an expert in depression, with a four-year experiential degree and graduate studies in how to live a life going forward that keeps the ever-lurking Depression at a healthy distance.
