271. Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  – Matthew 5:3

Those who are depressed, distraught, filled with grief, and otherwise in low conditions are the poor in spirit. They feel as if their very lifeblood is draining from them and either fight in weakness or surrender to Jesus and receive the strength of His grace. When depression first threw its black cloud over and through me, I fought in weakness and lost at every turn. No one could help me. Only when I accepted my condition and became humble and lowly in my own eyes, asking Jesus to have mercy on me, did I start emerging from the darkness into the kingdom of heaven on earth.

About Patrick Day

In 2010, I escaped from four long years of deep, dark depression. This blog shares lessons I learned from those years as depicted in my autobiography - How I Escaped from Depression - as well as other insights about depression and anxiety that only come from someone who has gone through it. When you have a heart attack, you become an expert in heart attacks. When you have diabetes, you become an expert in that condition. As such, I am an expert in depression, with a four-year experiential degree and graduate studies in how to live a life going forward that keeps the ever-lurking Depression at a healthy distance.

Interesting perspective. Never considered “poor in spirit” to relate to this particular group. However, you are very likely to be right on target. Thanks for your insight!
