102. Good, Better, Best

Good, better, best
Never let it rest
Until the good is better
And the better best

It is good to have your body healed; it is better to have your body and soul healed; it is best to have your body, soul, and spirit healed.

If a depressed person is in crisis, he/she needs to first

move out of crisis. This is often, but not always, medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. Once out of crisis, he/she needs to discover the causes of his/her depression and that is a psychotherapist who plumbs the depths of the mind, will, and emotions to bring understanding, new thinking, and new behaviors that advance the healing process.

Too often, people stop there and are just a bad night’s sleep or a highly stressful situation away from returning to the pit. Adding the third leg to the stool – the spiritual – creates a solid footing to reach a state of stability, where one is able to function at an intensity level that once created crisis. Beyond stability, there are a few who reach a level of mastery over their depression, where they can experience a wide range of intensities of depression and still function, as King David, Charles Spurgeon, and Abraham Lincoln did.

About Patrick Day

In 2010, I escaped from four long years of deep, dark depression. This blog shares lessons I learned from those years as depicted in my autobiography - How I Escaped from Depression - as well as other insights about depression and anxiety that only come from someone who has gone through it. When you have a heart attack, you become an expert in heart attacks. When you have diabetes, you become an expert in that condition. As such, I am an expert in depression, with a four-year experiential degree and graduate studies in how to live a life going forward that keeps the ever-lurking Depression at a healthy distance.
